Back to School Makeup Ideas
Hello guys! It's now summer time meaning that those of you who go to school will be breaking up for the summer. Now I know this may be a little early, but I think that it's better to be prepared. Lots of younger girls in secondary school seems to be at the age where they will be experimenting with makeup. I know my 13 year old younger sister is. So, I thought I'd write a post on makeup you could wear to school. This post isn't trying to encourage younger girls to wear makeup at all (you're young..enjoy it whilst you can!!) but I thought it might be helpful for those who are curious. Hope you enjoy!
Most schools that I'm aware of don't allow pupils to wear heavy makeup at school. This could be for many reasons. It could be to make you look smart (fits in with the uniform thing) or it could be a distraction. Either way, rules are rules. I have used my little sister Megan and her friend Natalie to practise different makeup looks on, and showed them how they can do it themselves!
As I've said, a general school rule is no heavy makeup. This means (I imagine) no full face, no strong brows, natural looking makeup. I taught the girls a little trick for their base makeup that'll cover any blemishes/spots and is really easy to do - use foundation as a concealer. Foundations tend to be a lot thinner in consistency then a concealer, so when blended very lightly over blemishes it looks really natural but still covers any redness.
On the girls, I used a few different foundations such as Benefit Oxygen Wow or Mac Studio Sculpt. Both worked really well, but are quite expensive to save up for with pocket money. Cheaper alternatives that also work really well are Rimmel's Wake Me Up Foundation, £8.99 or Miss Sporty Morning Baby BB Cream £3.49. After blending with my fingers, the girl's skin looked beautiful and flawless, but still very natural.
Below are some ideas of different makeup looks that would be suitable for school.
This is my baby sister Megan. She's recently become quite interested in makeup, so I thought of a look that would be really easy for beginners to do, and fit in with school rules. On her face, I used my MAC Studio Sculpt in NW20 as she's quite pale. I dotted that around her blemishes (any redness or darker areas) as you would do a concealer. I then blended that so it looked even. Any medium coverage foundation would work with this.
Afterwards, I dusted a little Rimmel Stay Matte Powder all over her face. This powder is very popular with a lot of makeup artists and beauty bloggers, it stays put all day and is great value for money too! I then popped a little bit of Natural Collection Blushed Cheeks in Pink Cloud over her cheekbones.
I let Megan choose which eye shadow colours she wanted, and she chose two from my Ted Baker Can't Take My Eyes Off You palette. She chose the dark bronze/gold colour at the end and the shimmery cream colour a few pans down. I put the lighter colour all over her lid and blended the gold colour into her crease and outer corners and that was the result (above). Obviously I was careful not to pack too much colour on there, but I really like the shimmery effect it left and it looks really pretty.
I then added one coat of Rimmel Scandal Eyes Mascara in Extreme Black, but I didn't put any on her bottom lashes so that it still looked minimalistic and natural.
For lips, Megan wasn't really keen on any colour. So I just put some Carmex on them to make them look really healthy and glossy. Carmex is brilliant for chapped/sore lips and works in minutes!
For Natalie, the skin routine was pretty much the same. But for her eyes, she chose a matte dark blue colour and the shimmery cream colour from my Ted Baker Palette. Natalie has beautiful big green eyes so I thought the blue would look lovely next to them. I placed the shimmery colour all over her lid and into her crease. I then very lightly blended the tiniest amount of the blue into her outer corners and towards the middle of her lid. I really loved the effect it left, a really minimalistic smokey eye that is suitable for school. I then popped a little bit of Rimmel London Lash Accelerator Endless Mascara in Black on her lashes.
To finish the look, I added a little bit of Rimmel 1000 Kisses Lip Tint in Stay Very Berry. It's long lasting colour but not too pigmented, perfect for school.
I hope this post was useful to you guys! I'd love to hear about what products you use for school and any other tips I can pass on to my sister. Ciao! .x.

My Favourite University Recipes - Cheap & Easy
Since I seem to be on a roll with posts about university, I thought what the heck, may as well do another one! Before going to uni, one of my main concerns was learning how to cook. I'm not the best chef in the world, but after a year of living independently I've learned how to make a decent spag bol and a banging share size plate of nachos. Have a read of some of my favourite recipes that I made during my first year at uni.
Spag Bol (Spaghetti Bolognese) (Serves 3-4)
Ingredients
1 finely diced onion
1 500g carton of passata OR 1 tin of chopped tomatoes if you like it more chunky
250g of minced beef
350g spaghetti (more or less depending on your preferred portion size!)
1 tbs of cooking oil (whatever you've got in!)
2 tbs tomato puree
1 garlic clove
salt & pepper to taste
Special Pesto Pasta (Serves 2-3)
Ingredients
1 tbs of any cooking oil
Small jar of green/basil pesto
Any spicy sausage/meat (My favourites were chorizo, pepperami sticks, pepperoni, salami)
500g Whichever pasta you like! (I preferred penne for this one)
100g Pitted olives (both green and black work fine)
A sprinkle of parmesan
Spag Bol (Spaghetti Bolognese) (Serves 3-4)
Ingredients
1 finely diced onion
1 500g carton of passata OR 1 tin of chopped tomatoes if you like it more chunky
250g of minced beef
350g spaghetti (more or less depending on your preferred portion size!)
1 tbs of cooking oil (whatever you've got in!)
2 tbs tomato puree
1 garlic clove
salt & pepper to taste
- Prepare your ingredients, make sure your mince meat is defrosted and that your garlic is ready (peel the coat off and finely dice. Squish with the side of your knife to get the juices flowing ;] )
- pop the oil in a saucepan and heat up using a gentle heat
- put the finely chopped onion and garlic in the pan and stir together until golden brown and soft
- on a high heat, add the defrosted minced beef and stir in until brown, make sure the onions and garlic are evenly distributed into the meat too!
- pour the passata or tomatoes over the mixture and stir
- add tomato puree and stir in
- season with salt and pepper to your taste
- put the heat on low again and leave to simmer for around 30 minutes
- cook spaghetti (I don't think anyone needs to know how to cook dried pasta..read the packet!!)
- Serve with garlic bread and dried parmesan to make the meal go further
Special Pesto Pasta (Serves 2-3)
Ingredients
1 tbs of any cooking oil
Small jar of green/basil pesto
Any spicy sausage/meat (My favourites were chorizo, pepperami sticks, pepperoni, salami)
500g Whichever pasta you like! (I preferred penne for this one)
100g Pitted olives (both green and black work fine)
A sprinkle of parmesan
- Boil your pasta and drain
- In a saucepan, heat the oil on low heat
- Add olives and heat through for around half a minute
- Add pesto and sausage/meat and heat through
- Chuck the ready cooked pasta in and stir evenly so that the pesto mixture is coating all the pasta
- Serve with cheesy bread or a side salad to make the meal go further
Easy Layered Nachos (Serves 3-4)
Ingredients
400g Lightly salted tortilla chips
300g Salsa (mild or hot depending on your taste)
300g Sour cream & chive dip
300g Guacamole
250g block of cheddar cheese (strength on your taste)
100g jalapenos (optional)
- Preheat your oven on a medium heat
- On a medium sized baking tray, spread out half of the tortilla chips on the tray
- Add a layer of salsa (About half)
- Add a layer of sour cream and chive dip (About half)
- Add a large sprinke of cheese
- Pop some jalapenos on
- Add some more tortilla chips
- Repeat steps 3-6
- Pop tray in the oven for 10 minutes, checking occasionally
- Leave to cool for a few minutes
- Serve as part of a Mexican night with fajitas or tacos to make the meal go further!
Vegetable Curry (Serves 4)
Ingredients
500g Frozen mixed vegetables
Any leftover or tinned vegetables you have in!
1 jar of curry sauce (whichever is your favourite!)
2 packets of microwave rice OR 300g of dried rice
1 tbs cooking oil (any)
- If using dried rice, put the rice in a pan of boiling water with 1tbs of oil and a dash of salt (the oil stops the rice from sticking together..I learned the hard way)
- Heat the cooking oil on a low heat
- Put frozen and fresh veg in first and stir for about 2 minutes
- Put in any tinned vegetables you may have (drained)
- Pour in all of the sauce (when you've emptied most of it, put a bit of water in the jar with the lid on and shake, pour the excess in so there is no waste!)
- Stir whilst heating the curry up
- When the sauce starts slightly bubbling, leave to simmer for around 15 minutes
- If using microwave rice, follow instructions on the packet when you think the curry is almost ready
- Serve with naan bread and samosas to make the meal go further!
If you decide to try any of these out, let me know how it goes! I'd also love to hear some of your favourite student recipes

Top 6 Tips Whilst at University
So I've just finished writing my last post '5 Good Reasons to go to University' and I thought it would be good to write a follow up post on Top 6 Tips Whilst at University. If you have read my previous post you will know that I have just finished my first year at Hull School of Art & Design and over the course of the year I have found new ways to make student life as easy and as affordable as possible. So I thought I'd share them with you!
- Find a job
I know you'll probably hear this over and over again from your parents before you leave home, but it is so true. It's all well and good having student finance and thinking you have all the money in the world, but trust me when I say that it will not tide you over for three months. In the UK it may be hard to find a job, but there are still plenty out there if you look hard enough! Websites such as Student Beans and Universal Jobmatch are great for part time job searches whilst you are studying. Big fast food companies such as McDonald's and Subway are also brilliant to work for. Not only are they flexible with hours and pay regularly..you also get free food. Bonus! - Supermarket own brands are your friend
Being a snob when it comes to brands of food whilst at uni is going to get you no where. Most of the time, you will notice that cheaper brands of the same products are very similar to the expensive version. Why waste your money? Things like dilute juice, bread, milk, ready meals and cleaning products work exactly the same but are cheaper. Better still, if you use price comparison sites such as My Supermarket, you will find which supermarket has the cheaper priced value products. It just makes sense. - Take advantage of student nights out
Most students like to party in their first year of uni, it's pretty much a well known fact. A combination of new found freedom and student finance is bound to end in boozy madness. However, whilst on a night out, it may be useful to be aware of all the drinks offers at the clubs and pubs you might visit. Take a look on their website to see if they have any student deals on, or even ask the bar staff themselves what sort of deals are on, as they may change on different nights. As mentioned in my previous post, it's definitely worth checking out which night of the week is student night. It'll save you a bunch of cash and you'll find that loads of other students will be out too! - Attend lectures
I can't stress enough how important it is to attend your lectures. I went through a stage where I didn't think it was that important to attend lectures and I can find the information out online. How wrong was I! I ended up missing out on so much useful information that I really needed for one of my coursework pieces, and I had to beg a fellow class mate for the information that I had missed. It doesn't make you very popular and it isn't great for your grades. Even if you're on deaths door with the worlds worst hangover, it is so important to drag yourself out of your pit and just go! - Make friends with your house mates
9 times out out of 10, your accommodation for your first year at uni will be spent in student halls of residence. For me, this was one of the best bits about going to uni! Meeting new people and enjoying the university experience together is lovely, and it's made even better if you've made some great mates out of it too. Luckily for me, I became very close to 2 girls who I lived with in my first year. We got on so well that all three of us are living somewhere new together next year - I can't wait! Not only will making friends make you happier in general, but it is also very useful. When I'd forgotten to buy milk for my morning brew, it was so useful to be able to ask a good friend to lend a splash of theirs. Of course, don't make a habit of borrowing things and make sure you return the favour, if not you will probably lose friends very quickly. Another thing - don't force friendship. It'll either happen or it won't. If you try desperately to become best friends with someone in a small space of time, you'll either scare the living daylights out of them or be thought of as a high class weirdo. Nobody wants that. - Be money savvy
It is so easy to get carried away and spend all of your student finance in the first few weeks leaving you skint with no access to cash (unless you have very generous parents). There are a few easy solutions to stop you from over spending. As already mentioned, cheaper grocery brands and getting a job are almost compulsory. Another tip is to plan ahead. With everything. I know it sounds like more hassle then it's worth, but trust me it helps. For example, if you're planning a night out with your friends, make sure that you withdraw your cash first and leave your bank card at home. (It is also wise to make sure you have emergency taxi cash too, this doesn't mean you have to spend it on extra booze). I've found that on a typical student night out, £20 is more than enough to cover entry fees to my favourite clubs, and a few cheeky drinks to get me merry with my friends. Planning meals for a few days ahead or even up to a week can really help save cash too. When you do your supermarket shop, have a list or an idea in your head of what sort of meals you'll be cooking. Multi purpose ingredients are also very useful. For example, a own brand carton of passata can be used for spag bol one night, and a chilli con carne the next. See? Simples.
Hope these tips have helped you! They certainly helped me, even though most of them took a while to click. Post below any tips you guys might have!
Ciao for now .x.
